A black swan event is considered to be an unforeseen and unlikely occurrence that has extreme consequences. A grey rhino is a highly probable, high impact yet neglected event, with many considering COVID-19 to be of this species.

Our last Alumni event for 2021 saw an expert panel of Helen Cook, Neil Hackett and Trent Bartlett deep dive into “grey rhino” thinking around risk anticipation, mitigation and management as critical responsibilities of boards and CEOs. They generously and honestly shared their personal stories and significantly diverse insights into how Boards, CEOs and organisations could and indeed should plan for disruption.

As always, our Alumni and invited guests posed probing questions to the panel – which always adds greater richness to these sessions. We certainly all walked away challenged to think (and act) differently in this context.

Our thanks to Alumni Dr Nicky Howe (Signature Program 2016) for facilitating this session and to Paul Vivian (Signature Program 2009) from Bankwest for hosting us.
